Jakarta. The Attorney General’s Office plans to issue a wanted persons notice for Jurist Tan, a former special staffer to ex-Education Minister Nadiem Makarim, after he repeatedly failed to appear for questioning in a corruption probe linked to a multibillion-rupiah Chromebook procurement project.

“Usually, on the third summons, it is accompanied by the issuance of a wanted notice,” said Anang Supriatna, spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office, in Jakarta on Friday.

Jurist Tan, who has been named a suspect in the case, missed questioning sessions on July 18 and 21 and is believed to be overseas. Authorities have not yet confirmed when a third summons will be sent.

Anang said prosecutors are prioritizing the proper delivery of a final summons before escalating to a wanted notice or a red notice through Interpol if Tan continues to ignore the summons.

“There are procedures that must be fulfilled first,” Anang said.

The case centers on a government program to procure 1.2 million Chromebook laptops for students across Indonesia’s remote and disadvantaged regions between 2020 and 2022. The Rp 9.3 trillion ($573 million) project was funded by the state budget and special allocation funds.

The Attorney General’s Office said the laptops failed to meet the program’s goals due to the limitations of Chrome OS in remote regions with poor internet connectivity, resulting in financial losses for the state. Chromebooks rely heavily on internet access, which remains uneven across Indonesia.

Following the investigation, prosecutors named four suspects in the case, including Jurist.  They are Mulyatsyah, the former director of junior high schools at the Education Ministry; Sri Wahyuningsih, the former director of primary schools; and Ibrahim Arief, a technology consultant at the ministry.
