7.7-Magnitude Quake Strikes Sulawesi Sea, Tsunami Possible
Jakarta. A 7.7-magnitude quake struck the Sulawesi Sea at around 6.37 a.m. Jakarta time, triggering tsunami warnings in nearby areas.
According to Indonesia’s meteorology agency BMKG, the earthquake’s epicenter was at around 236 kilometers northwest of Tahuna, Sangihe Islands, in North Sulawesi. Several coastal regions in Sulawesi, North Maluku, and East Kalimantan had also received the tsunami warnings.
BMKG has urged residents to evacuate to safer locations and stay away from beaches.
As of 7.11 a.m. Jakarta time, BMKG had detected two aftershocks, at magnitudes of 6.7 and 5.9, respectively.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 also rocked Mindanao in the southern Philippines that same day.
