7.7-Magnitude Sulawesi Quake Triggers Small Tsunamis
Jakarta. The 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Monday in the Sulawesi Sea triggered tsunamis of less than 1 meter in local regions.
The highest wave occurred in Talengan, North Sulawesi, reaching 0.75 meters at 8.20 a.m. Jakarta time. Some also reached the 0.30-meter mark in Tahuna and Melonguane, according to Indonesia’s meteorology agency BMKG.
The body also attributed the earthquakes -- followed by small tsunamis -- to the subduction activities at the Philippine Sea plate.
“The Philippine Sea plate is not in the megathrust zone, so this is a subduction zone,” BMKG director Wijayanto told a press conference, as reported by the state news agency Antara.
Reports by Beritasatu.com also saw the disaster had sent locals rushing out of their homes and premises.
The government confirmed that a massive earthquake rocking the Philippines did not claim any Indonesian victims, with reports saying that the disaster had killed at least 12 people and injured over 200 others.
“There is no Indonesian victim affected by the quake [in the Philippines],” Foreign Ministry’s director for citizen protection Heni Hamidah said.
"We urge all Indonesians to keep an eye on the developments."
