Tour de Batam: Inaugural Gran Fondo Indonesia Series Set for October
Batam. Batam, Riau Islands is set to host the inaugural event of the Gran Fondo Indonesia Series as part of the Tour de Batam cycling event scheduled for Oct. 5-6, 2024. This event is expected to attract cycling enthusiasts from across Indonesia and neighboring countries, boosting Batam's reputation as a top destination for sports tourism.
Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno said the event is expected to attract visitors and establish Batam and the Riau Islands as a sports tourism destination. "This is one of the events our cycling community has been eagerly waiting for. Cycling is very popular right now," Sandiaga said.
A Gran Fondo is a long-distance cycling event, typically covering 100 to 200 kilometers, designed for both amateur and experienced cyclists, often featuring challenging routes and a festive atmosphere.
The two-day event will kick off with the UCI 1.2 One Day Race, featuring teams from the UCI Asia Tour and national cycling squads. The following day, the Gran Fondo Indonesia Series will welcome around 1,000 cycling enthusiasts, marking the series' debut in Indonesia.
In addition to the cycling races, a bazaar showcasing creative products from local micro and small enterprises in the Riau Islands will be held for participants and visitors.
The event’s route will cover a scenic loop from Nongsa to the iconic Barelang Bridge, offering stunning views of Batam's landscape. Organizers hope to establish the Tour de Batam as an annual event, which could significantly benefit the region's economy by increasing tourism.
