Jakarta. Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has recently set some rules on smart luggage if passengers wish to carry these battery-powered bags in the cabin.

According to Garuda Indonesia, any cabin baggage, including smart luggage, should not exceed 7 kilograms and 56 x 36 x 23 cm (linear 115 centimeters). Its battery capacity should not be more than 100 Wh.

“We only allow passengers to take smart luggage with removable batteries,” Irfan Setiaputra, the chief executive officer at Garuda Indonesia, said on Thursday.

Smart luggage that exceeds those specifications is not allowed to be in the cabin. If the battery capacity tops 100 Wh but is still less than 160 Wh, passengers can take the smart luggage as checked baggage as long as they get the airline’s approval.

“Smart luggage whose lithium battery capacity exceeds 160 Wh is not allowed, be it as a cabin or a checked baggage,” Irfan said.

The rules on cabin bags adhere to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) policies and the relevant domestic regulations. Passengers should also inform the staff if they are using smart luggage during the pre-flight procedures, according to Irfan.
