Toyota Indonesia Invests Rp 2.5T in Facility to Build Yaris Cross
Jakarta. Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia plans to invest Rp 2.5 trillion ($168 million) in a facility to build the hybrid electric version of the hatchback model Yaris Cross in Karawang, West Java.
Yaris Cross will become the second Toyota hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) built in Indonesia for the export markets after the MPV model Innova Zenix.
Toyota Indonesia Chief Executive Officer Warih Andang Tjahjono said Yaris Cross will add the lineup of low-emission, fuel-saving models for Indonesian customers in line with the government's green policies.
He claimed that the local content of Yaris Cross accounts for 80 percent in both the HEV and gasoline variants.
"We are hopeful that [the investment] will bring economic contribution to Indonesia,” Warih said in Karawang on Tuesday.
The facility to assemble Yaris Cross batteries is located at Toyota’s Karawang 2 Assembly Plant while the engine is manufactured at Karawang 3 Assembly Plant.
Bob Azam, the company’s director for external relations, said the Yaris Cross project involved 116 local suppliers to increase add the portion of local content.
