Jakarta. Rupiah weakened on Wednesday as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of key economic data releases from the United States and Indonesia.

Data from Bloomberg showed the rupiah slipping 19 points, or 0.11%, to Rp 16,772 per dollar in the spot market. The dollar index, however, edged down 0.05% to 97.39.

On Tuesday, the rupiah had closed firmer, gaining 44 points to Rp 16,754 per dollar.

Currency analyst Lukman Leong of Doo Financial Futures said that the rupiah is likely to see limited downside as markets brace for a string of major economic indicators. “The rupiah is expected to consolidate with a bias toward mild weakening against the dollar, as investors remain in wait-and-see mode ahead of several key US economic releases in the coming days, as well as Indonesia’s fourth-quarter 2025 GDP data due tomorrow,” Lukman said.

In the US, the Institute for Supply Management services index is forecast to ease to 53.5 from 54.4 previously. Meanwhile, Non-Farm Payrolls data scheduled for Friday (Feb. 6, 2026) had been expected to show job growth of 68,000, up from 50,000 in the prior month.

However, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics has announced that the January 2026 NFP report will be postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing partial government shutdown, which began on Jan. 31 following a congressional deadlock over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.

On the domestic front, Indonesia’s GDP growth for the fourth quarter of 2025 is estimated at 5% year-on-year, translating into quarterly growth of 1.43%.

“Domestic sentiment has yet to fully recover, while Asian markets are expected to turn risk-off today, tracking Wall Street after a sell-off in US technology stocks, which could spill over to Asian tech shares,” Lukman said. Given these factors, the rupiah is projected to trade in the range of Rp 16,700 to Rp 16,850 per dollar.
