Jakarta. Rupiah slipped further on Tuesday afternoon, weakening 15 points to Rp 16,751 against the US dollar. The currency had earlier fallen as much as 35 points from Monday’s close at Rp 16,736, according to market data.

Ibrahim Assuaibi, Director at Traze Andalan Futures, said the rupiah remained under pressure as investors waited for clearer signals on the US Federal Reserve’s policy stance. The prolonged US government shutdown, the longest in history,  has delayed the release of several key economic indicators, adding to market uncertainty.

“Several Fed policymakers, including Atlanta Fed President Bostic and Kansas City Fed President Schmid, have voiced concerns over inflation or indicated support for holding rates,” Ibrahim said in a written statement on Tuesday.

Investors are now watching September’s nonfarm payrolls data, scheduled for release on Thursday, which will likely serve as the latest labor market reference before the Fed’s December 10–11 meeting.

According to CME FedWatch, markets currently see a 42.4 percent chance of a 25-basis-point rate cut and a 57.6 percent probability of the Fed keeping rates unchanged. Ibrahim added that traders are also eyeing the release of the October FOMC minutes on Wednesday, followed by US Bureau of Labor Statistics data later in the week.

The rupiah also faced additional pressure after reports that the US is preparing new sanctions on Russia, following a sanctions bill signed by President Donald Trump.
