Jakarta. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said on Tuesday that the rupiah’s slide beyond 17,100 per US dollar had been anticipated by the government and remains within the parameters of its fiscal planning.

The 2026 state budget, approved by the government and the House of Representatives, is based on an exchange rate assumption of 16,500 per dollar.

Purbaya said the Finance Ministry does not rely on a single exchange rate assumption when drafting the budget, but instead prepares multiple scenarios to account for potential global market volatility.

“I want to emphasize that in our simulations, the rupiah exchange rate is also adjusted to higher levels. What is happening now is still within those scenarios,” Purbaya told reporters in Jakarta.

His remarks came after the rupiah weakened to 17,105 per dollar, marking its lowest level on record and surpassing the trough seen during the 1998 Asian financial crisis.

However, Purbaya declined to disclose the upper bounds of the government’s exchange rate assumptions under which the state budget would remain sustainable.

“I cannot say what level is included in the scenario. If I disclose it, the market could react negatively and trigger speculation,” he said.

He added that maintaining exchange rate stability falls primarily under the authority of Bank Indonesia, while the Finance Ministry’s role is to ensure currency volatility does not disrupt overall state spending and revenue.

“We leave the rupiah to the experts at the central bank, and I trust they can maintain stability,” Purbaya said.
