Jakarta. In preparation for the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday season, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi announced on Sunday that Panjang Port in Lampung has been designated to receive ferry passengers arriving from Merak Port in Banten.

This decision aims to alleviate sea traffic congestion and offer an alternative arrival point for ferry travelers crossing between Java and Sumatra islands, especially considering the expected surge in passenger numbers during one of Indonesia's largest Muslim holidays.

Traditionally, ferry passengers from Merak have been transported to Bakahueni Port as their primary destination.

"We are maximizing the use of Panjang Port in Tanjung Karang, Lampung. Passengers arriving there can save an hour of travel time to the provincial capital, Bandar Lampung," the minister said during his visit to Merak Port.

To further streamline traffic flow, the Transportation Ministry is collaborating with the National Police to enforce regulations against overloaded cargo trucks along the toll road to Merak. This measure aims to prioritize smoother travel for passengers heading to Sumatra during the holiday rush.

"We urge truck operators to comply with regulations, as overloaded trucks could significantly disrupt holiday traffic," Budi said.

Additionally, in an effort to manage sea traffic effectively, cargo deliveries from Merak will now be diverted to either Ciwandan Port or Panjang Port in Lampung, according to Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy.

"Ferries arriving at Bakauheni will only disembark passengers before returning to Merak for additional passenger pickups. Cargo handling will be directed to Ciwandan and Panjang ports," Muhadjir said.

These strategic measures aim to enhance holiday travel experiences and ensure the smooth flow of both passengers and cargo during the festive season.
