Jakarta. Indonesia is targeting 17.6 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2026, while domestic travel is projected to reach 1.18 billion trips, the government announced on Thursday.

From January to September 2025, the Ministry of Tourism recorded 11.43 million foreign visitor arrivals, an increase of 10.22 percent year on year. Over the same period, domestic tourism reached 901.90 million trips, growing 18.99 percent year on year.

“We aim to push those numbers even higher for both international and domestic travel,” Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in Jakarta.

The government is also setting a target for Indonesia to rise into the global top twenty of the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2026, a benchmark used by the industry to shape strategy, product development, and service innovation.

Widiyanti noted that cultural tourism remains a major driver, with many visitors seeking immersive local experiences such as village tours, daily activities with residents, and hands-on traditional craft workshops.

Eco-conscious travel is also shaping demand, she added, as tourists increasingly prefer destinations and facilities that apply sustainable tourism principles.

Widiyanti highlighted the significant potential in nature-based tourism, including caving and diving excursions that adhere to strict safety standards. Indonesia’s vast biodiversity positions the country as a leading destination for nature and adventure-based travel.

“Indonesia’s extraordinary natural wealth makes nature and adventure tourism one of our most powerful attractions,” she said.

In addition to culture and nature, culinary tourism continues to rise, drawing travelers eager to explore Indonesia’s diverse regional cuisines.

“Tourism success is not measured only by visitor numbers,” Widiyanti said. “It is also defined by the quality of the visitor experience, community welfare, and the preservation of local culture and the environment.”
