Jakarta. Indonesia seeks to attract tourism sector investments to regions outside Bali.

The province has gained international recognition as a tourist haven. However, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana recently admitted that investments had mainly focused on Bali, particularly in Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, and Ubud.

"Indonesia is not just Bali. We have many other great destinations that hold immense tourism and investment potential. They are waiting to be developed in a responsible and sustainable manner," Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana was quoted by state news agency Antara.

Indonesia recorded around 15.39 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2025, of which almost 7 million of those visits are highly concentrated in Bali.

The government is currently focusing on creating 10 priority tourist destinations as new economic engines. They are Lake Toba (North Sumatra), Borobudur (Central Java), Mandalika (West Nusa Tenggara), Labuan Bajo (East Nusa Tenggara), Likupang (North Sulawesi), Tanjung Kelayang (Bangka Belitung), Bromo Tengger Semeru (East Java), Wakatobi (Southeast Sulawesi), Morotai (North Maluku), and Raja Ampat (Southwest Papua).

The government has also set up three of the so-called "regenerative tourism destinations" aimed at restoring the environment and boosting the local economy. These efforts align with global tourism trends that increasingly emphasize sustainability, wellness tourism, and authentic and meaningful travel experiences.

The government is also working on an application programming interface-based verification system to make sure all tourist accommodations on digital platforms have secured their business permits, according to Widiyanti.
