Indonesia Prepares Long-Term Contract for Russian Crude
Jakarta. Indonesia is preparing a long-term contract for Russian crude oil, according to Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.
Indonesia has agreed to buy up to 150 million barrels of Russian crude following the Iran war-induced energy crunch. The country has already received the first shipment, which reportedly totaled roughly 770,000 barrels. Speaking to reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday, Bahlil said that work was underway for the next round of imports.
“We will draft a long-term contract,” Bahlil was quoted as saying by the state news agency Antara.
He went on to say that how Indonesia meets its energy demands is “not a matter that other countries can intervene in”. The European Union previously had called on Southeast Asian nations to search for alternatives to Russian crude, which had faced sanctions following the Russo-Ukraine war.
“Our country adopts a free and active [foreign policy]. … We must maintain our independence,” Bahlil said, while adding that the purchases are meant to make sure that Indonesia has enough fuel for its people.
The imports are taking place under a government-to-government scheme. Indonesia has appointed the state energy agency Lemigas to manage the Russian crude orders.
According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia’s crude imports in the first half of 2026 mainly came from Nigeria.
