Prabowo’s Brother Says Indonesia Buys 150 Million Barrels of Russian Oil
Jakarta. Indonesia has agreed to buy 150 million barrels of Russian oil, according to President Prabowo Subianto’s younger brother, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, as the government remained tight-lipped on the volume.
Indonesia had reached a deal to procure Russian crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) following Prabowo’s recent trip to Moscow. The order came after the Iran war continued to put global oil supplies under pressure as the Strait of Hormuz blockade remained in place. Hashim -- who is also the president’s special envoy for energy -- spilled more details into the arrangement.
“Indonesia has made a commitment to the Russian government -- Indonesia will store 150 million barrels of oil to address economic disruptions,” Hashim said in Jakarta on Thursday, as reported by the state news agency Antara.
He went on to say that Prabowo and his Russian counterpart had a three-hour meeting. Russia agreed to immediately send 100 million barrels of oil to Indonesia at a “special price”.
Moscow is also willing to add the supply by another 50 million barrels if needed, according to Hashim. He also indirectly dismissed criticisms over his brother’s frequent trips, saying the president "did not go to Moscow to have fun.”
Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia had signaled that Moscow would ship the crude oil soon. Indonesia, however, is still finalizing the LPG delivery.
As for the prices, the Russian embassy not long ago clarified that talks related to the bill would be a matter of business-to-business negotiation “depending on the current global market conditions.”
