Jakarta. Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund Danantara celebrates its first anniversary on Wednesday, pledging to help accelerate economic growth and strengthen oversight of state-owned assets.

Danantara Chief Executive Officer Rosan Roeslani said the agency is expected to play a key role in supporting the government’s target of achieving 8% economic growth.

According to Rosan, Danantara, officially established on Feb. 24, is designed not only as an engine of growth but also as a tool to ensure the benefits of development are distributed more evenly across the country.

“We want to create 8% growth while ensuring that it is felt by all segments of Indonesian society,” Rosan said.

The fund was created to manage state investments and consolidate assets from state-owned enterprises to improve efficiency, transparency and economic impact. Rosan said the institution also reflects the spirit of Article 33 of Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution, which mandates that economic resources be managed for the prosperity of the people.

President Prabowo Subianto has tasked Danantara with overseeing assets belonging to state-owned enterprises, a concept rooted in the vision of his father, the late economist Sumitro Djojohadikusumo.

The fund currently manages about $900 billion in state assets and aims to increase that to around $2.7 trillion by 2030. As part of the restructuring, the government plans to cut the number of state-linked companies from about 1,000 entities, including subsidiaries, to around 200 to improve efficiency and governance.

Prabowo said the fund should aim to contribute at least $50 billion annually to the state, based on a minimum return on assets (ROA) target of 5% from the $900 billion in assets it manages. Danantara’s current ROA from SOEs is around 1.88%, according to Toto Pranoto, associate director of the BUMN Research Group at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia.

“If we require only a 5% return on assets, that means Danantara must return $50 billion to the state every year,” Prabowo said during the anniversary event in South Jakarta.

The president said the benchmark is modest for now given the fund’s early stage, adding that the long-term goal is to reach annual returns of 10% to 15%.

Prabowo also mentioned the complexity of the country’s state enterprise ecosystem, revealing that the number of state-linked companies exceeds 1,000 entities when subsidiaries and sub-subsidiaries are included. He said he had initially believed the government managed around 250 companies.

“There is no management theory anywhere in the world where one management system can oversee 1,000 entities,” he said.

Prabowo cited state oil and gas company Pertamina as an example, stating the energy giant has around 200 subsidiaries and affiliated entities.

To strengthen oversight, the president said he plans to appoint special presidential envoys to monitor major state-owned companies.Prabowo added that preventing leaks in the management of state assets is critical to ensuring that the benefits of Indonesia’s resources reach the public and future generations.

“These assets are the lifeblood of the Indonesian nation,” he said. “If they keep leaking, the country will suffer.”

Prabowo also said he had received a report that the return on assets (ROA) of Danantara reached 300% in 2025.

Prabowo said he hoped the figure was accurate and not manipulated to please him. “I hope this report is real. Don’t play games with me by submitting false reports,” he said.
