BPS: Food, Gold Push Indonesia’s Year-End Inflation to 2.92%
Jakarta. Indonesia’s inflation accelerated in December 2025, driven mainly by higher food prices and rising gold costs, data from Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showed on Monday.
Consumer prices climbed 0.64% in December, pushing annual inflation to 2.92% and setting the full-year inflation rate at the same level. The consumer price index rose to 109.92 from 109.20 a month earlier.
“The monthly inflationary pressure was reflected in the increase in the consumer price index,” said Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at the Central Statistics Agency, Pudji Ismartini.
The biggest monthly contributor came from the food, beverages, and tobacco group, which recorded 1.66% inflation and contributed 0.48 percentage points to headline inflation. Price increases were led by bird’s eye chili (0.17 pp), broiler chicken (0.09 pp), shallots (0.07 pp), fresh fish (0.04 pp), and eggs (0.03 pp).
Outside food, gold jewelry also exerted notable upward pressure, reflecting the continued rise in global gold prices. Fuel prices and airfares added smaller contributions, while red chili provided limited relief, posting mild deflation.
By component, inflation was primarily driven by volatile prices, which jumped 2.74% month-on-month (MoM) and accounted for 0.45 percentage points of headline inflation. Core inflation stood at 0.20% MoM, while administered prices rose 0.37% MoM, partly reflecting fuel prices and transportation tariffs during the year-end holiday period.
Regionally, all provinces recorded inflation in December. Aceh posted the highest monthly rate at 3.60%, while North Maluku saw the lowest at 0.05%. BPS noted that provinces hit by late-November hydrometeorological disasters —e Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra — shifted into inflation after experiencing deflation a month earlier, largely due to disrupted food supplies.
On an annual basis, inflation was again led by the food, beverages, and tobacco group, which rose 4.58% YoY and contributed 1.33 percentage points. Core inflation reached 2.38% YoY, with gold jewelry, cooking oil, housing rents, education fees, and ground coffee among the main drivers.
BPS said December inflation followed a seasonal pattern seen in recent years, where prices typically rise during major religious holidays and the year-end festive period.
