Jakarta. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia visited China on Wednesday to inspect the construction of a massive floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) processing facility, set to be among the largest of its kind globally. The vessel is being built at Wison New Energies’ shipyard in Nantong, Jiangsu Province.

The FLNG unit will process gas from the Asap Kido Merah field in Teluk Bintuni Regency, West Papua, operated by Genting Oil Kasuri Limited, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Genting Group.

“This floating LNG facility is expected to be completed in early 2027 and will commence production in West Papua a few months later,” Bahlil said in a statement.

Designed with an annual production capacity of 1.2 million metric tons of LNG, the project carries an investment value of approximately $963 million.

“This will be Indonesia’s largest LNG vessel and, according to reports, the ninth-largest in the world,” Bahlil said.

The project stems from an agreement signed in June 2024 between Genting Group and China’s Wison New Energies. Gas supply will come from the Asap Kido Merah field, projected to produce 330 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) starting in 2027.

The Wison Nantong Yard, where the FLNG is being built, has been operating since 2006 in the Nantong High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, around 135 kilometers from Shanghai. The facility can construct up to five FLNG units annually.
