New AI Regulation in Indonesia Aims to Address Ethical Use and Data Security
Jakarta. Nezar Patria, Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Technology, announced that the ministry is preparing to issue a ministerial regulation on artificial intelligence (AI). This regulation aims to establish clear guidelines for the use of AI technology in Indonesia.
"We are working on a ministerial regulation, or potentially a more comprehensive framework, on AI," Nezar told reporters at the Peninsula Hotel in West Jakarta on Friday.
Currently, the ministry has only issued a temporary circular providing general guidelines for AI use. Nezar expressed hopes that the new regulation will offer more detailed and specific guidance.
The proposed ministerial regulation is still under review. Nezar noted that the process involves thorough examination and extensive dialogue with experts and stakeholders.
"This will be carefully studied, and it requires a process and dialogue with the AI development ecosystem," he concluded.
The current circular outlines several key ethical guidelines for the use of AI. These guidelines include ensuring that AI is not used for policy or decision-making that impacts humanity, upholding values of equality, fairness, and peace in generating information and innovations, and respecting human rights, social relationships, and individual opinions. The circular also emphasizes the importance of data and user security, inclusivity, and non-discrimination.
Additionally, the guidelines stress the need for transparency in data usage to prevent misuse, ensuring that AI-generated information is reliable and accountable when disseminated to the public. The circular mandates the protection of personal data in compliance with legal regulations and adherence to intellectual property rights.
