Menlo Park, California. Meta Platforms is cutting about 600 artificial intelligence jobs even as it continues hiring for its superintelligence lab, the company confirmed Wednesday.

The layoffs will affect Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) division as well as its product-related AI and AI infrastructure teams, according to Axios, which first reported the move. The company’s newer TBD Lab, focused on building Meta’s next-generation large language models, will not be affected.

In a memo cited by Axios, Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang told employees that those impacted are encouraged to apply for other roles within Meta, and most are expected to be reassigned internally.

The Menlo Park, California-based company continues to actively recruit for TBD Lab, which is developing Meta’s latest large language models (LLMs), the same kind of technology that powers OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s own Llama models.

Meta has taken a different approach to AI than its rivals, releasing Llama as a free, open-source platform that allows users to access and modify parts of its code. The company says more than one billion people use its AI tools each month, though analysts note that Meta still trails OpenAI and Google in mainstream consumer adoption of LLM-based applications.
