Jakarta. Indonesia has approved the sale of Apple’s newly launched iPhone 17 series, with devices expected to hit the market as early as October, government officials confirmed on Thursday.

The approval comes after Apple submitted an application to the Industry Ministry to obtain a domestic content certification, a requirement under Indonesia’s local component rules.

Following certification, Apple must still secure distribution approval from the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry, as well as import permits from the Trade Ministry.

“At the earliest, the devices could be available in Indonesia in about three weeks, or by early October,” said Heru Kustanto, head of the Center for Domestic Product Utilization at the Industry Ministry.

Apple’s compliance marks a significant step forward after the iPhone 16 launch was delayed in Indonesia last year due to the company’s failure to meet the local content requirements.

Indonesia requires smartphone makers to meet a domestic component threshold -- locally abbreviated as TKDN -- before their devices can be sold in the country.

The policy, aimed at encouraging technology transfer, local investment, and job creation, has posed challenges for global manufacturers, including Apple, which typically relies on its established global supply chain.

While companies like Samsung and Chinese smartphone brands have met the requirements by assembling devices or investing in local operations, Apple has faced repeated delays in rolling out new iPhone models in Indonesia.

The iPhone 17 lineup, unveiled earlier this week, includes the iPhone Air, promoted as the thinnest smartphone Apple has ever released.

Apple’s newest phones boast better cameras, longer-lasting batteries, and a handful of other upgrades across the board. The latest devices come with a new A19 chip, which will particularly help power Apple’s artificial intelligence features.

In addition to better camera quality on its front and back-facing lenses, iPhone 17’s front camera has been upgraded across its lineup to have a wider field of view and a new sensor, allowing users to take landscape photos and other selfie orientations without having to rotate their phones.

iPhone's new Air offering also gives users the option to record videos using the front and back cameras simultaneously. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max added a more powerful telephoto lens, among other improvements.

Apple also boasted longer battery life across its iPhone 17 lineup. It said that its new iPhone Air, in particular, would be the tech giant's most power-efficient iPhone yet.

The going price for the iPhone 17 begins at about $800 -- compared to $1,100 and $1,200 for its iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models. The iPhone Air will start at $1,000.
