Jakarta. Indonesia's Universitas Terbuka (UT) climbed into the 801-1000 global band in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Rankings 2026, marking a significant improvement from the 1001-1500 group last year as the university's open and distance learning model gains greater international recognition.

The rankings, released on June 24, assessed 1,603 universities across 116 countries and territories based on their contributions to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UT recorded its strongest performance in SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, ranking 201-300 globally. It also placed 401-600 for SDG 4: Quality Education, 401-600 for SDG 5: Gender Equality, 401-600 for SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and 601-800 for SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

The results reflect the university's expanding contribution beyond academic performance to institutional governance, inclusive education, gender equality, environmental sustainability and global partnerships.

UT's overall score rose to 56.9 in 2026 from 51.8 a year earlier, surpassing the performance target set in the university's strategic plan.

A major milestone this year was UT's participation across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, up from just five SDGs in the 2025 rankings, providing a more comprehensive assessment of its contribution to sustainable development.

The university said its highest ranking in SDG 16 highlights its commitment to strengthening institutional governance through accountability, transparency and quality public services.

As Indonesia's state-owned open university, UT has focused on expanding access to higher education for students who may be unable to attend conventional campus-based programs.

Through its open and distance learning system, the university serves a diverse student population that includes recent high school graduates, working professionals, teachers, civil servants, entrepreneurs and lifelong learners across Indonesia's vast archipelago.

Unlike traditional universities, UT's learning environment extends beyond physical classrooms, allowing students to study remotely through digital platforms while balancing work, family and other responsibilities.

The university said this flexible approach has made higher education more accessible to people from different age groups, professions and socioeconomic backgrounds.

UT said the latest international recognition reinforces its position as a leading provider of open and distance education while demonstrating that universities are increasingly evaluated not only on academic excellence but also on their broader social impact.

The university added that the improved ranking reflects its commitment to building an education system that is inclusive, adaptive and closely connected to the needs of society, enabling more Indonesians to pursue higher education without interrupting their careers or personal lives.
