Jakarta. The world of work continues to evolve, bringing increasingly dynamic demands for human resources. Graduates are no longer expected to rely solely on technical knowledge and skills. They must also be able to adapt, build networks, work across sectors, and turn their competencies into creative work and economic opportunities.

These challenges were highlighted by Universitas Terbuka’s (UT) Vocational School through the 2026 National Seminar of the UT Vocational School, themed “Learn, Link, Lead: Empowering Vocational Talent through Academia–Industry Collaboration,” held on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the Universitas Terbuka Convention Center (UTCC) in Pondok Cabe, South Tangerang.

The seminar served as a platform for UT’s Vocational School to strengthen connections between vocational education and universities, industry, businesses, the government and the creative economy ecosystem. Such collaboration is increasingly important as vocational education is not only about equipping students with competencies, but also ensuring those competencies remain connected to workforce needs and industry developments.

One of the seminar’s key agendas was the signing of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and memorandums of agreement (MoAs) with partner institutions. The partnerships form part of the Vocational School’s efforts to build a vocational education ecosystem that is more closely aligned with the needs of the workforce and developments across industries.

Through these collaborations, students can gain opportunities to develop their competencies, engage in practice-based learning, strengthen industry networks and participate in initiatives that support the quality of vocational talent. This approach is intended to ensure that ties between higher education and the workplace extend beyond discussion and translate into broader opportunities for learning and skills development.

The importance of these connections was further explored through the presence of the Ministry of Creative Economy at the keynote session, titled “Vocational Education Meets the Creative Economy: From Competence to Creation and Economic Strength”

The session highlighted the importance of connecting competencies gained through vocational education with the ability to create works, drive innovation and generate economic value amid the continued growth of the creative economy ecosystem.

The ministry’s participation also reinforced the perspective that vocational graduates are not only being prepared to enter the workforce, but are also equipped to innovate, create opportunities and contribute to the development of Indonesia’s creative industries.

Following the keynote speech, the UT Vocational School presented a commemorative gift to the Ministry of Creative Economy as a gesture of appreciation for its collaboration and support in strengthening vocational education and the creative economy.

The discussion then moved into an academic and industry forum, bringing together the Director of Vocational Education at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), the Director of Vocational Education at Makassar’s Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang (PNUP), the Director of Vocational Education at Universitas Indonesia (UI), and a representative of PT Mobil Anak Bangsa.

The Academic Lecture Forum provided a space for exchanging ideas on vocational education development, workforce competency needs and the importance of higher education-industry collaboration in preparing human resources to meet changing demands.

Participants also had the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers through a question-and-answer session, discussing issues surrounding vocational education and its links with industry.

For the UT Vocational School, “Learn, Link, Lead” represents more than the seminar’s theme.

Learn serves as the foundation for continuous learning and competency development. Link emphasizes networks and collaboration with industry and other stakeholders as an important part of talent development. Lead encourages vocational students and graduates to take an active role and lead change through their competencies and innovations.

Through the national seminar, UT’s Vocational School reaffirmed its commitment to developing vocational education that adapts to industry needs and the growth of the creative economy.

The series of activities is expected to go beyond serving as an academic forum and become a platform for expanding collaborative networks and developing concrete partnerships for vocational education, industry and Indonesia’s creative economy.

Ultimately, vocational education is not only about preparing individuals to enter the workforce. It is also about equipping talent to understand change, connect with opportunities and create value through their competencies.

From learning comes competence. From connection comes collaboration. And from both, talent can grow—not only ready to face change, but also capable of helping shape it.
