PIS, PAL Join Forces to Build Maritime Industry
Jakarta. Marine logistics firm Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) and the shipbuilder PAL Indonesia recently partnered to build Indonesia’s maritime industry.
The two state-owned companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) last week that explored collaboration on shipbuilding and modifications. The deal also revolved around fleet maintenance, capability development including that of human capital. PIS is the marine logistics subholding of the oil giant Pertamina.
“This is a great first step. We appreciate these links and the great support from PAL. We realize we have to keep transforming. We are in the middle of our own transformation to advance the energy industry,” Pertamina president director Simon Aloysius Mantiri said.
PIS President Director Surya Tri Harto went on to say that “domestic and global energy challenges require the company to continue strengthening its fleet and services.”
“The signing of this MoU also marks our commitment to advancing the domestic maritime industry," said Surya.
The MoU builds on the existing collaboration that includes ship maintenance and repairs. PAL has also built PIS vessels.
PIS has distributed 161 billion liters of oil, fuel products, and LPG throughout the country and internationally — an achievement that the company attributed to business transformers Mati n and fleet rejuvenation.
PIS currently operates approximately 750 vessels, consisting of owned and chartered vessels — 111 of which are owned. This fleet serves energy shipments and various domestic and international shipping needs, making PIS one of the largest operators in Southeast Asia.
PAL Indonesia Chief Executive Officer Kaharuddin Djenod said that this aligns with the government instructions to create a self-sufficient maritime industry amidst today’s geopolitical conditions.
"This is the first step for us to revitalize the industry as a whole in Indonesia. If we can work together, it will stimulate market potential and provide a multiplier effect for the maritime industry ecosystem," Kaharuddin said.
By optimizing the assets and networks of both companies, the partnership is expected to open new opportunities, strengthen the national shipping ecosystem, and provide added value to the national economy.
