Indonesia-China Youth Exchange Builds New Bridges Through Culture and Creativity
Jakarta. A series of Indonesia-China youth cultural exchange activities titled “Boundless Creativity, Connecting Young Generations” officially took place in Jakarta on Aug. 6, 2026.
The event was jointly organized by the China Intercontinental Communication Center and Garuda TV, with Luoyang Broadcasting Media Group and Skyworth Coolita Technology serving as co-organizers. More than 800 participants attended the opening ceremony, including representatives of government agencies and related institutions, cultural figures, media representatives, creative industry players, academics, and young people from Indonesia and China.
The program featured a range of activities bringing together culture, media, digital technology, contemporary art, film and youth creativity. The “MEKAR – Luoyang Digital Cultural Heritage Exhibition” and “Boundless” – Chinese Young Artists World Tour in Indonesia were also officially opened during the event.
The event also marked the launch of several new collaborations, including the FAST Alliance between Indonesian and Chinese media institutions, the Indonesian screening of the micro-drama series “MEKAR,” and the Indonesia-China Audiovisual Initiative – Nanyang Film Festival.
Strengthening Film and Creative Industry Exchanges Through the Nanyang Film Festival
One of the programs featured in the series of activities was the Nanyang Film Festival, an initiative aimed at strengthening exchanges in film and the audiovisual industry between Indonesia, China and Southeast Asia.
Through the festival, films are presented not only as entertainment, but also as a medium for cultural exchange, a platform for creators and industry players to connect, and a bridge for introducing perspectives from the two countries.
Nanyang Bridge Media: Connecting Indonesia and China Through Media and Creativity
Nanyang Bridge Media, a company engaged in media, content production and distribution, and cross-market services between Indonesia and China, is playing an important role in developing audiovisual cooperation as part of the program.
Kim Pei Xuan, Managing Director of Nanyang Bridge Media, said cultural exchanges through film and media have significant potential to bring Indonesian and Chinese communities closer together.
“Film has the ability to bring audiences closer to the lives, cultures and perspectives of other countries. Through the Nanyang Film Festival, we want to build more than just a film festival. We want to create a bridge that brings together Indonesian and Chinese creators, industries and young generations through stories and audiovisual works.”
According to Kim Pei Xuan, the growing development of digital platforms and content industries in both countries is creating new opportunities for Indonesia-China collaboration.
“Indonesia has a highly dynamic creative ecosystem and market, while China has significant strengths in content production, digital technology and the creative industries. By connecting these two ecosystems, we hope to create more opportunities for the exchange of content, talent and knowledge, as well as business collaboration.”
Nanyang Bridge Media views the Nanyang Film Festival as part of a long-term vision to build a creative bridge connecting Indonesia, China and Southeast Asia, with film and audiovisual content serving as key instruments.
Fostering Cultural Dialogue Through Young Generations
In his remarks, Wang Siping, Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Indonesia, said cultural cooperation between Indonesia and China has developed rapidly in recent years, with increasingly intensive people-to-people exchanges.
He said the program featured a variety of activities, ranging from discussions on cultural preservation, digital innovation and digital intelligence to media cooperation and artistic exchanges.
The “MEKAR – Luoyang Digital Cultural Heritage Exhibition” introduces the Oriental aesthetics of the ancient city of Luoyang to Indonesian audiences through digital technology, allowing cultural heritage to be presented in a more vivid and interactive way.
Meanwhile, “Boundless” – Chinese Young Artists World Tour showcases contemporary artworks by young Chinese artists and provides an opportunity to explore how a new generation interprets cultural diversity through the lens of contemporary art.
“Indonesia-China relations are built not only through cooperation between governments, but also through increasingly strong people-to-people ties. Culture plays a strategic role in creating space for dialogue, introducing the values of both nations, and creating opportunities for mutual understanding and collaboration,” said Anindita Kusuma Listya, Special Adviser to the Minister of Culture for Cultural Diplomacy and Cultural Industries.
“Indonesia and China have large young populations with tremendous potential, creativity and enthusiasm to build the future. Collaboration between young people from the two countries can strengthen bilateral relations while contributing to technological and cultural advancement and regional prosperity,” said Al Busyra Basnur, Chairman of the Indonesia-China Friendship Association (PPIT).
He added that people-to-people relations play an important role in building mutual understanding and strengthening trust as the foundation for sustainable bilateral relations.
Cultural Diplomacy in a Younger, Digital Format
Arianto Surojo, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Guangzhou, said the “Boundless Creativity, Connecting Young Generations” program offers an innovative approach to cultural exchange that is relevant to today's younger generation.
He said an approach combining young people, digital technology and creativity can provide opportunities for Indonesian and Chinese communities to get to know one another more directly and deeply.
The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Guangzhou will also continue to serve as a bridge for promoting youth exchanges, cultural ties, media cooperation, and exchanges in science and technology between Indonesia and China.
Expanding Media and Content Cooperation
Li Mian, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the China Intercontinental Communication Center, said CICC remains committed to its mission of “helping the world understand China and helping China understand the world.”
Over the years, CICC has established cooperation with major media organizations across Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, through audiovisual programs, television broadcasts, documentaries, micro-drama series, co-productions and content development.
Through its collaboration with Garuda TV for the event, CICC hopes to expand artistic exchanges and dialogue between Indonesian and Chinese youth through a range of exhibitions and collaborative projects.
The cooperation launched during the event, including the FAST Alliance, the screening of the “MEKAR” micro-drama, and the Indonesia-China Audiovisual Initiative and Nanyang Film Festival, is expected to bring more stories of friendship between the two countries while opening access to digital technologies and resources.
Media as a Bridge, Youth as the Future
Garuda TV President Director Fahmi M. Anwari said culture is the soul of cooperation, young people are the successors of the future, while media serves as a bridge for communication between communities.
He said the event was not only a continuation of the traditional friendship between Indonesia and China, but also an exploration of new models and pathways for people-to-people cooperation in the digital era.
The digital Luoyang cultural heritage exhibition and Chinese young artists exhibition combine the richness of thousands of years of Chinese civilization with the creativity of today's younger generation. The use of digital technology offers a new approach to bringing cultural heritage to life while opening a new window for Indonesians, particularly young people, to learn about China and Chinese culture.
Bringing Together Institutions, Academics, Creative Industries and Artists
The program also brought together institutions and industry players from both countries for dialogue and thematic discussions.
Participants included the China National Archives of Publications and Culture, Luoyang Broadcasting Media Group, Tencent Cloud, Honor of Kings, JAK TV, Universitas Indonesia, LSPR Institute of Communication & Business, Jakarta Film Commission, KADIN, Jakarta Creative Economy Committee, Jakarta Experience Board (JXB) and various other creative institutions and communities.
The event also featured Indonesian contemporary painter Sidik W. Martowidjojo and young Chinese artist Ren Zhe, who presented several of their works during discussions on art, creativity, culture and young people.
The discussions covered topics including cultural preservation, digital innovation, media and audiovisuals, creative industries, technology, contemporary art, and opportunities for collaboration between young Indonesians and Chinese.
Building an Indonesia-China Creative Bridge
The “Boundless Creativity, Connecting Young Generations” program demonstrates how cultural exchanges between Indonesia and China are expanding into a variety of new forms.
From digital cultural heritage and contemporary art to media, micro-dramas and filmmaking, these initiatives are creating new opportunities for people in both countries not only to learn about each other's cultures, but also to create works, build networks and collaborate.
For Nanyang Bridge Media, the development of the Nanyang Film Festival represents a concrete step toward bringing this spirit into the film and audiovisual industry ecosystem.
By bringing together films, creators, media, industry players and young people, the Nanyang Film Festival is expected to become a cultural and creative bridge connecting Indonesia, China and Southeast Asia, while strengthening people-to-people ties through the power of storytelling and audiovisual works.
