Jakarta. Indonesia wants its partnership with China to be mutually beneficial, according to a freshly appointed deputy ambassador.

Indonesian Deputy Ambassador to Beijing Irene, who had just started her role, recently laid out her strategies to promote Jakarta's links with one of its key partners. The doctor said she would focus on building the high-level political trust and strategic dialogue that is based on mutual respect, equality, and the principle of non-intervention.

"In Mandarin, we often hear the term 互利共赢 (hùlì gòngyíng), which means 'mutual benefit and win-win'. This is the spirit I want to bring to bear in my contribution, ensuring that our cooperation is fair, balanced, and sustainable," Irene was quoted as saying in a press statement.

Her diplomacy will also put a focus on promoting concrete cooperation that provides tangible benefits to the people of both countries. This cooperation covers trade and investment, green development, digital innovation, health, education, and people-to-people exchanges. Irene went on to say that the two nations can play a strategic role as fellow Global South economies in promoting regional stability and global development.

"With wise cooperation, Indonesia and China can contribute to regional stability and inclusive global development, toward what is often referred to as 命运与共 (mìngyùn yǔ gòng), or a shared future," Irene said.

Last but not least is a focus on protecting the Indonesian citizens in China, be it the businesspeople, workers, students, researchers, and families.

"We will continue to strive to protect the rights of Indonesian citizens, support their activities, and appreciate every achievement they make. The success of Indonesian citizens in China is also the success of the Indonesian nation," she said.

According to Irene, Indonesia and China both view diversity as a source of strength. She cited the Chinese expression "和而不同" (hé ér bù tóng), which means harmony without uniformity, and Indonesia's national motto, "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika."

"These two values teach that differences are not barriers to cooperation, but rather capital for building partnerships of mutual respect and a focus on the future," Irene said.

President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated Irene as the deputy ambassador on Oct. 8.
