Indonesia Ramps Up Digital Economy Push
Jakarta. Indonesia continues its push to grow its digital economy and financial technologies.
The government is building its synergy across ministries, agencies, local governments, and industry players to do so as seen in the recent 2026 Indonesia Digital Financial Economy Festival (FEKDI) and the Indonesia Fintech Summit and Expo (IFSE).
According to Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, the development of the digital economy requires support from a resilient national economy and coordinated policies.
In the first semester of 2026, the national economy grew by 5.45%, while inflation in August 2026 remained controlled at 3.19% year-on-year (yoy).
“Indonesia’s digital economy is estimated to approach $100 billion by 2025 and is projected to reach $180–340 billion by 2030," Airlangga said.
As of June 2026, QRIS has registed 65.77 million users and 44.86 million merchants, with some 96.68% of these sellers being classified as micro, small and medium enterprises.
Indonesia’s digital economy is the largest in Southeast Asia, with a value estimated to approach $100 billion by 2025 and projected to reach $80–340 billion by 2030. The government also continues to expand financial digitalization in the regions. By 2026, 518 out of 546 local governments—or 94.9%—had established digital ecosystems, while the realization of non-cash local tax and levy collections reached Rp 165 trillion ($9.2 billion) in the first semester of 2026, marking a 10.6% year-on-year increase.
“Meanwhile, connectivity support via low-earth-orbit satellites has reached 269 local governments, in synergy with all Bank Indonesia representative offices," Airlangga said.
"the use of the Indonesian Credit Card (KKI) by local governments and ministries/agencies—which became usable on the national e-catalog starting October 2026—is being expanded through collaborations involving the e-catalog, marketplaces, and MSMEs."
Looking toward 2027, regional digitalization efforts need to be directed at improving the quality of public services, enhancing the regional investment climate, monetizing the use of regional assets in a more orderly manner (such as for rentals), and developing digital infrastructure.
The 2026 OJK survey recorded a financial inclusion index of 93.61% and a financial literacy rate of 69.57%, figures that exceed the 63% average for financial inclusion in OECD countries.
This achievement has been driven, in part, by the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the financial sector to generate new economic value and enhance the quality of decision-making. AI adoption has expanded across various financial sector activities, including automated Know Your Customer (KYC) verification and credit scoring.
There are also efforts to strengthen digital talent, including Indonesia-Singapore tech talent exchanges, gig economy pilot programs, super tax deductions of up to 200% for vocational training, and scholarships.
Indonesia is also actively negotiating the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA). It has also become a founding member of the China-backed AI alliance WAICO, which opens up opportunities for workforce training in China.
