Bogor. The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is pushing for greener production systems at Nutrition Fulfilling Service Units (SPPG) that support the government’s free nutritious meals program. One of its pilot sites, the Bogor Tamansari Sukamantri SPPG, is now being positioned as a potential national model for zero-waste operations, driven by maggot-based waste processing, a circular economic system, and consistently maintained hygiene standards.

The Sukamantri zero-waste concept does more than reduce food waste. It creates added value by converting leftover food into feed for maggots, which are then processed into animal feed and organic fertilizer. This circular ecosystem reflects BGN’s broader vision to make every SPPG more efficient, self-sustaining, and environmentally friendly.

Sujimin, popularly known as “Jimmy Hantu,” founder of the Mutiara Keraton Solo Foundation, has assisted in developing the model. He emphasized the tangible environmental and social impact of the initiative.

“We want SPPG operations to not only produce nutritious meals, but also become centers of environmental education. The maggot system is effective, productive, and highly scalable across other regions,” he said.

Dhia Aidha Wahyuningtyas, Head of the Bogor Tamansari Sukamantri SPPG, explained that zero-waste principles were embedded from the kitchen planning stage, ensuring every production process eliminates waste.

“All leftover food is processed into maggot feed, the maggot becomes livestock feed, and livestock products support ingredients for MBG meals. This cycle creates healthier, more efficient, and eco-friendly production,” she noted.

According to BGN’s Head of Legal and Public Relations Bureau, Khairul Hidayati, the Sukamantri model will serve as a benchmark for other centers aiming to strengthen sustainability standards.

“Sukamantri proves that national nutrition programs can progress alongside responsible environmental management. Zero-waste here is a real practice that can be replicated elsewhere,” she said in Bogor on Tuesday.

Hidayati added that BGN is preparing to scale up the model across multiple provinces. “Transforming SPPGs is part of BGN’s larger roadmap. We want all regions to adopt the same standards — safe, hygienic, efficient, and low-waste. This is essential for the long-term sustainability of MBG programs,” she concluded.
