BGN Pushes Zero-Waste as SPPG Margomulyo Converts MBG Kitchen Waste Into Biofuel
Jakarta. The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) continues to promote environmentally friendly practices across all kitchens under the Free Nutritious Meals Program (MBG), encouraging a zero-waste approach nationwide. One standout example comes from the Nutritional Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) Margomulyo Seyegan in Sleman, Yogyakarta.
BGN’s Head of Legal and Public Relations, Khairul Hidayati (Hida), said SPPG units across Indonesia are now going beyond their core mission of providing nutritious meals for children by adopting integrated waste-management systems that support environmental preservation.
“SPPGs must think about how kitchen scraps and food waste can be repurposed rather than polluting the environment. We appreciate Margomulyo’s commitment to implementing a green, zero-waste kitchen concept consistently,” Hida said during her visit on Friday.
Hida said that the achievements of SPPG Margomulyo demonstrate how food-management transformation can be aligned with broader sustainability goals.
“BGN will continue to encourage the expansion and replication of these best practices so they become part of the work culture across all SPPG locations,” she added.
Ranto, Director of Provision and Distribution for Region 3 at BGN, who also joined the visit, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to strengthening guidelines for eco-friendly kitchens nationwide.
“Going forward, we want every SPPG to have a clear and measurable waste-management standard. The goal is to ensure that MBG implementation not only fulfills nutritional needs, but also avoids creating environmental burdens,” Ranto said.
Transforming Food Waste Into Fertilizer and Biofuel
Joni Prasetyo, Head of SPPG Margomulyo Seyegan, explained that the kitchen applies a fully integrated waste-processing system, from utilizing available land to upcycling food waste.
“We use biopores for water absorption and organic-waste processing. No leftover food goes unused. Organic waste becomes maggot feed or is channeled into biopores to produce organic fertilizer,” Joni said.
For non-organic waste such as used cooking oil, plastics, and other residues, the SPPG partners with the Reuse, Reduce, Recycle Waste Processing Facility (TP3SR).
“There is no unused leftover food; organic waste becomes maggot feed and organic fertilizer through biopores. Meanwhile, non-organic waste is processed through TP3SR into eco-friendly biofuel,” he added.
During the visit, Molly Prabawaty, Expert Staff to the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs for Communications and Mass Media, also praised the initiative.
She said the zero-waste system implemented by SPPG Margomulyo shows how government–community collaboration can create a healthy and sustainable food ecosystem.
Molly added that the green-kitchen model supports the national campaign to reduce waste and promote a circular economy. She hopes the initiative will inspire SPPG units across Indonesia.
