Jakarta. Middle powers such as Indonesia will play a bigger role in the next world order, according to a recent foreign policy forum.

The 2025 Conference on Indonesian Foreign Policy (CIFP) took place in Jakarta's Kota Kasablanka Mall over the weekend. Hosting the forum was the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI). The conference embraced the theme “Preparing for the Next World Order: Indonesia, the Global South, and the West”. It highlighted the shift from the Western world order to a new structure full of uncertainty, great power competition. This transition will likely see Indonesia playing a bigger role in the future.

“In the next world order, the primacy of the West is over. Not because they are declining, but because others and many others are rising. The American unipolar moment is gone due to the new distribution of power; no matter what the US does, it can never reclaim the unipolarity they enjoyed briefly after 1991," FPCI Founder and Chairman Dino Patti Djalal said.

"The next world order will be characterised by the rise of the middle powers …. We at FPCI really believe that the middle powers will play a decisive role in shaping the next world order.”

According to the former diplomat, Indonesia has taken a pioneering diplomatic role in the past, citing the Bandung Conference, the Non-Aligned Movement, and ASEAN.

"This tradition must never be lost to our diplomats. They must demonstrate that the power of our diplomacy rests on the power of our ideas and ideals. Our foreign policy establishment must always be intellectually competitive and have the courage to take a stand and take risks for a better world," Dino said.

The conference has brought together foreign policy figures, experts, and government officials. It also zeroed in on the recent G20 summit and the Gaza crisis. Another major talking point is how Indonesia can maximize its role under President Prabowo Subianto, whom Dino described as someone being highly active in diplomatic affairs, as the world transitions into a new global order.
