UK Picks Manchester to Host 2027 G20 Leaders’ Summit
Manchester. The United Kingdom will host the 22nd G20 Leaders’ Summit in Manchester on Nov. 27-28, 2027, bringing together leaders of the world's major economies to discuss global growth and other pressing international challenges.
The summit will bring heads of state and government from G20 members to Manchester, while other cities and regions across the UK will host G20-related meetings and events throughout Britain's presidency.
“Hosting the G20 in Manchester next year will be an opportunity to showcase some of the best that British communities and industries the length and breadth of this country have to offer,” UK First Secretary of State Louise Haigh said in a statement on Monday.
The UK last hosted a G20 Leaders’ Summit in London in April 2009, at the height of the global financial crisis.
At that meeting, world leaders agreed on measures worth an additional $1.1 trillion to support the global economy, restore credit and promote growth and employment.
The G20 comprises 19 countries, including Indonesia, as well as the European Union and African Union. Its members collectively account for around 85% of global GDP, more than 75% of international trade and about two-thirds of the world's population.
The group serves as the principal international forum for economic cooperation among the world's major economies.
British Ambassador to Indonesia Dominic Jermey said the UK's 2027 G20 presidency would also provide an opportunity for Britain and Indonesia to advance common priorities and strengthen their Strategic Partnership.
Indonesia hosted the G20 presidency in 2022, culminating in the Leaders’ Summit in Bali in November that year.
“Indonesia warmly welcomed the UK and the world to Bali during its G20 Presidency in 2022. Next year, it will be our turn to return that hospitality as the UK and Manchester warmly welcome Indonesia,” Jermey said.
“The UK’s G20 Presidency will be an important opportunity to deepen our Strategic Partnership, continuing our work together on growth and resilience, security and peace, people and society, as well as tackling global challenges and creating opportunities that matter to people in both our countries.”
Summit at Manchester Central
The Leaders’ Summit will be held at Manchester Central Convention Centre in the city center, with thousands of diplomats, officials and representatives of international organizations expected to attend alongside world leaders.
The choice of Manchester will put one of Britain's largest cities at the center of global diplomacy for the two-day gathering.
The G20's permanent members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and the United States, together with the European Union and African Union.
