Two Indian Nationals Arrested in Bali With 10.3 Kg of Cannabis From Thailand
Mangupura, Bali. Indonesian authorities have arrested two Indian nationals for allegedly smuggling 10.3 kilograms of dried cannabis through the international arrivals area of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali.
The suspects, identified by their initials as AR, 28, and PC, 31, were arrested by customs officers and narcotics investigators from the Ngurah Rai Airport Police after arriving from Thailand on a Scoot Airlines flight on Aug. 3.
Ngurah Rai Airport Police Chief AKBP I Made Hendra Agustina said the two raised suspicions after their arrival, prompting customs officers to inspect them and their luggage.
“After the plane landed, the two were suspected because of their suspicious behavior. Customs officers then inspected them and their luggage,” Made Hendra said on Saturday.
The inspection uncovered 100 packages containing a total of 10.3 kilograms of dried cannabis. Authorities found 62 packages in AR’s suitcase and another 38 packages in PC’s luggage.
The cannabis was reportedly packaged to resemble food souvenirs, according to the authorities.
Made Hendra said preliminary questioning indicated that the suspects were acting as couriers and had been tasked with transporting the drugs for a wider network. However, investigators are still examining their roles and the circumstances surrounding the shipment.
“When they were arrested, they were in transit. We are still investigating who was supposed to pick them up and other details,” he said.
The two suspects are being held at the Ngurah Rai Airport Police detention facility as investigators continue their investigation.
Authorities are also working to identify other members of the suspected international drug trafficking network believed to have orchestrated the shipment and determine where the cannabis was supposed to be delivered.
