Indonesian Police Arrest Suspect over THC-Laced Candy Shipped from UK
Jakarta. Indonesian police said Wednesday they are investigating the distribution of candy containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that was allegedly shipped from the United Kingdom.
Brig. Gen. Eko Hadi Santoso, director of narcotics and illegal drugs crimes at the National Police Criminal Investigation Agency, said a 30-year-old suspect identified by the initials AJE had been arrested in connection with the case.
The investigation began after the Customs and Excise Office alerted police to a suspicious package sent from the UK to Indonesia through state-owned postal service Pos Indonesia. The parcel was addressed to a recipient named Sally Hartanto in Malang, East Java.
Upon inspection, authorities found three packages bearing the “AI” brand, each containing 10 pieces of candy.
“Laboratory testing by Customs and Excise found that the candy contained delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, a Class I narcotic,” Eko said in a statement.
Police subsequently tracked the shipment to Malang and arrested AJE on Aug. 24 after the suspect collected the parcel from a courier.
“Interrogation confirmed that the package shipped from the UK to Indonesia under the recipient name Sally Hartanto, containing narcotics-laced candy, belonged to AJE and had been ordered through a website,” Eko said.
According to Eko, AJE admitted to having ordered suspected narcotics on four occasions, including THC-laced candy, a product described as “LSD chocolate” and suspected of containing THC, and liquid suspected of containing THC.
All of the packages were shipped under the name Sally Hartanto, Eko said.
The suspect told investigators that the THC-laced candy was intended for personal consumption.
Police seized three packages of THC-laced candy, 12 pieces of chocolate suspected of containing THC, a mobile phone, and a laptop during the investigation.
Authorities said the seized THC products had a combined gross weight of 231 grams and an estimated value of Rp 693 million (around $39,000).
Investigators are continuing to question AJE and conducting laboratory tests on the other seized items.
