TNI Investigates Viral Video Alleging Assault on Papua Separatist
Jakarta. The Indonesian Military (TNI) is currently investigating a viral video that allegedly shows TNI soldiers involved in assaulting a member of a Papua separatist group identified as Definus Kogoya.
"Allegedly, a TNI personnel committed violence against a detainee, who is a member of the armed criminal group named Definus Kogoya," said TNI spokesman Nugraha Gumilar, in Jakarta, on Saturday.
However, the identity of the assailant has not been definitively established in the initial examination.
The assault took place at Pos Gome, Puncak Regency, Central Papua Province. Kapuspen emphasized that the TNI takes this allegation of assault seriously.
Regarding the perpetrators, Kapuspen said TNI is still investigating the allegations that they are TNI personnel.
"The investigation is ongoing. If there is more than one person in the video, some are involved in the assault and others are recording," said TNI's Kapuspen.
In the viral video on social media, a bound and injured man is assaulted by several individuals, some of whom are alleged to be TNI personnel.
In the recording, one of the perpetrators is believed to be a TNI soldier due to the attire worn, which possibly indicates the unit's name, namely Infantry Battalion (Yonif) Raider 300/Brajawijaya.
The inscription "300" in golden yellow is clearly printed on the chest of a green T-shirt, typical of the Indonesian Army.
However, until now there is no information confirming or denying these allegations.
Kapuspen urged the public to await further investigation results as the TNI is conducting a thorough examination of the video's content. He promised that the TNI would announce the investigation results if there are further developments.
Separately, the spokesman of the XVII/Cendrawasih Regional Military Command, Candra Kurnia, conveyed similar information to Kapuspen, stating that the TNI is still investigating the contents of the video, including its authenticity and the identities of the perpetrators of the assault.
He emphasized that if the investigation results show that the perpetrators are TNI personnel, then the TNI will take decisive action against them.
"If it is true that the perpetrators are TNI personnel, then they will be dealt with firmly and processed legally to be held accountable for their actions because the TNI is an institution that also respects the law and human rights," said Kapendam XVII/Cendrawasih in his written statement.
He stressed that the TNI and the Papuan community have a harmonious relationship, including between the Task Force Infantry Battalion 300/R and the community in Ilaga, where the soldiers have been stationed for almost a year.
"There have never been complaints about rough behavior towards the community. On the contrary, the community is very pleased with the Task Force Infantry Battalion 300/R and was honored by the Dani Tribe with the title of Kogoya from the Chief of the Great Tribal Chief of Puncak Regency in Gome," said Candra.
Task Force Infantry Battalion Raider 300/Brajawijaya began its duties as the Border Security Task Force in Papua on April 3, 2023.
