London. Thomas Tuchel is reportedly poised to become the next England head coach, according to multiple reports from English media outlets. The German coach is expected to succeed Gareth Southgate, following his departure after leading England to the final of this summer’s European Championship.

Tuchel, a Champions League winner with Chelsea, has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season. According to the BBC and other British media, Tuchel has agreed to take the role, making him the third non-English coach to lead the team, after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. Sky Germany reported that Tuchel has agreed to an 18-month contract and will begin in January.

The English Football Association (FA) has yet to make an official announcement.

"Until it's announced, I can't really comment, but we have to wait and see," said England captain Harry Kane, who previously worked with Tuchel at Bayern. "I know Thomas well from last year. Fantastic coach, fantastic person. I’m sure the FA will contact me when they know more about it."

Tuchel is well-known to English football fans, having led Chelsea to the Champions League title in 2021, defeating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with the Premier League club. His other accolades include two French league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich.

Southgate stepped down as England manager after the European Championship, having led the national team to two consecutive Euros finals and the 2018 World Cup semifinals. England Under-21 coach Lee Carsley temporarily took over and was considered a potential candidate for the permanent role. However, last week Carsley suggested England needed a "world-class coach."

Tuchel, with his experience managing top European clubs, fits the FA’s criteria for the role. In its job advertisement in July, the FA sought a coach with "significant experience of English football" and a "strong track record" in the Premier League or leading international competitions. The coach's primary objective is to win a major tournament and maintain England as one of the top-ranked teams globally.
