Six Killed in Trash Landslide at Bantargebang Landfill Near Jakarta
Bekasi, W. Java. At least six people have been found dead and one remains missing after a massive garbage landslide struck the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility in Bekasi, just east of Jakarta, following heavy rainfall on Sunday.
Joint search-and-rescue teams continued operations on Monday to locate the remaining victim buried under collapsed waste at the landfill site, authorities said.
Kusumo Wahyu Bintoro, Bekasi Metro Police chief, said search efforts would continue around the clock using a shift system to ensure continuous operations.
“We have agreed that the search will continue for 24 hours with rotating shifts,” Kusumo said on Monday.
Preliminary data shows that 13 people were caught in the landslide. Six victims have been confirmed dead, six survived, and one person is still missing, according to authorities.
“Today we found two additional victims who had died, bringing the total number of fatalities to six. Yesterday four victims were found, and today two more,” Kusumo said.
Rescue teams consisting of police, military personnel, search-and-rescue units, and volunteers are continuing to search the debris. Excavators have been deployed to assist in clearing the massive piles of waste that buried vehicles and roadside stalls near the landfill.
Earlier reports said several garbage trucks and small food stalls operating near the landfill were buried in the landslide.
Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the Jakarta Search and Rescue Office, said teams are still collecting data to determine whether additional victims remain trapped under the waste.
“There are still many garbage trucks and stalls buried in the area. We are currently conducting data collection to determine the number of victims,” she said.
Authorities are also gathering information from local residents and victims’ families to verify whether anyone else remains unaccounted for.
Police have urged members of the public whose relatives have not returned home since the incident to report to the police hotline.
“We ask anyone whose family members may still be missing to contact our call center at 110 so we can receive the information,” Kusumo said.
Search operations are being carried out cautiously as the waste mound remains unstable following heavy rainfall, raising concerns about the risk of further landslides. Emergency teams remain on site as recovery efforts continue.
