Jayapura. Sporadic attacks by separatist groups across Papua have killed at least 94 people throughout 2025, according to data released by local police on Thursday.

The fatalities stemmed from 104 recorded attacks across three provinces in the Papua region, Papua Police Chief Patrige Renwarin said.

Those killed included nine members of the Indonesian Military, six police officers, 64 civilians, and 15 members of separatist militias, Patrige said.

In addition to the fatalities, 112 people were injured during the attacks, including 43 members of the military and police, 64 civilians, and five separatist fighters.

To address ongoing security disruptions, police are encouraging local governments, regional legislative bodies, community leaders, and religious figures to take a leading role in promoting peace, Patrige said.

“A human-centered approach is expected to help create a sense of safety and stability across Tanah Papua,” he told reporters in Jayapura.

In several cases, the involvement of community and religious leaders has helped persuade members of the separatist Free Papua Movement (OPM) to renounce violence, pledge allegiance to Indonesia, and recognize the authority of Jakarta.

In December, five influential OPM members formally declared their return to Indonesia during a ceremony in Intan Jaya Regency. They were identified as Ferry Japugau, Yusak Kum, Vabianus Sani, Yanuarius Sani, and Yupianus Bilambani.
