Jakarta. Police have discovered what appears to be an airsoft rifle bearing references to convicted mass killers at the scene of Friday’s explosion at SMAN 72 Jakarta.

Photos obtained by Beritasatu.com show a black rifle resembling an AR-15, with white inscriptions reading “For Agartha,” “Brenton Tarrant. Welcome to Hell,” along with the names Anton Lundin Pettersson and Alexandre Bissonnette. Police later confirmed the rifle was a toy.

Brenton Tarrant carried out the 2019 mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 51 worshippers. Bissonnette committed the 2017 mosque shooting in Quebec City, Canada, which left six dead. Pettersson killed three people in a 2015 sword attack at a school in Trollhättan, Sweden, in a rampage driven by xenophobic motives.

However, police stressed it is too early to conclude whether the inscriptions indicate an ideological motive.

“We are still examining what appears to be a firearm. We are also waiting for the results from the bomb disposal team currently sterilizing the site,” Jakarta Police spokesperson Kombes Budi Hermanto told reporters on Friday.

Investigators also found an item resembling a pistol and a dark green belt with multiple compartments.

Authorities say the blast took place in the mosque area inside the public high school compound in Kelapa Gading Barat, North Jakarta, shortly after Friday prayers. Witnesses described students and teachers running in panic as officers evacuated the premises.

The school area remained sealed off on Friday afternoon as bomb disposal personnel and forensic teams continued collecting evidence. Police warned that the blast site may still be unsafe.

Jakarta Police have not confirmed the source of the explosion, and no official casualty figures have been released as of Friday evening.

Densus 88, Indonesia’s counterterrorism unit, has been called in to assist with identification and to determine whether the incident contains elements of terrorism.

Police urged the public not to draw premature conclusions.

“We are handling this very carefully,” Hermanto said. “We still need to establish exactly what caused the explosion and whether these items have any direct connection to it.”
