Jakarta. The seedling of Cyclone 91S is reported to be approaching the Greater Jakarta region, raising concerns among researchers and meteorologists. Dr Erma Yulihastin, a researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRI), highlighted the unusual occurrence in a tweet on the X platform on Monday, emphasizing the need for heightened attention.

Dr Yulihastin, known for her work in meteorology, noted that Cyclone 91S was also the culprit behind the major floods that hit Jakarta decades ago. She and her team are currently intensifying efforts to monitor the cyclone closely.

"This is a rare event reminiscent of the causes of the massive floods in Jakarta in 2002, where the vortex triggered persistent overnight rains for several days," wrote Dr Erma in her post.

While she refrained from confirming the likelihood of another major flood in Jakarta, she emphasized the proximity of the factors contributing to the situation.

"It's clear that the contributing factors are present, so we need to be alert to the possibility of a second flood following the events of Feb. 19," she added.

The presence of Cyclone 91S has been acknowledged by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). In a post on their official Instagram account on Sunday, BMKG mentioned that Cyclone 91S was observed in the southeast Indian Ocean, southwest of Lampung, affecting the weather and causing high waves in Indonesian waters.

According to BMKG, the seedling of Tropical Cyclone 91S is observed with a maximum wind speed of 25 knots and a minimum air pressure of 1001 hPa, moving southeast.

"Prediction: potential for the seedling of Tropical Cyclone 91S to develop into a moderate tropical cyclone," stated BMKG on their official Instagram account.
