Prosecutors Seizes 104 Tons of Tin From Convicted Mining Tycoon
Jakarta. Indonesian prosecutors have seized more than 104 metric tons of tin belonging to convicted mining executive Tamron Tamsil as part of an ongoing effort to recover state assets linked to one of the country's largest corruption cases.
The seizure was carried out in Bangka Belitung Islands Province, where authorities confiscated two batches of refined tin weighing 49,486 kilograms and 54,960 kilograms, Attorney General's Office spokesperson Anang Supriatna said on Tuesday.
According to prosecutors, the seized tin was owned by Tamron, who was convicted for his role in an illegal tin mining scheme that operated within concessions belonging to state-controlled PT Timah between 2015 and 2022.
Investigators identified Tamron as the beneficial owner of mining companies Venus Inti Perkasa and Menara Cipta Mulia, despite corporate records listing other individuals as the companies' legal owners.
Tamron was sentenced to 18 years in prison after being found guilty of corruption related to illegal mining activities.
State auditors estimated that the case caused Rp 300 trillion (about $16.7 billion) in total losses, including approximately Rp 271 trillion in environmental damage.
He was also convicted of laundering Rp 3.66 trillion (about $204 million) in criminal proceeds through the purchase of heavy equipment, government bonds, commercial properties, and other assets.
Last month, prosecutors also confiscated land and buildings across Bangka Belitung that investigators determined were beneficially owned by Tamron despite being registered under other names.
