Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has begun rolling out smart screens -- advanced digital displays that integrate touch interaction, voice control, and connectivity features -- to schools across the archipelago as the program seeks to make Indonesian students learn better in class.

The smart screen is part of Prabowo's strategy of quality education across the country. The Indonesian leader has set a target of distributing smart screens to 330,000 schools by the end of the year. Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister Atip Latipulhayat said Friday that the government still had a long way to go before it could reach the target. 

"To date, the smart screen distribution has reached around 10 percent," Atip said, as reported by Antara. 

Each school had also received one smart screen. Atip said that he had visited smart screen vendors to make sure that the devices were working. However, the government admitted that the smart screens had only made their way to schools in the island of Java, although efforts are underway to make sure that they also reach schools in remote areas. 

"We believe that technology can help us address illiteracy," Atip said, revealing that the nationwide illiteracy rate had fallen to 0.92 percent over the past five years.

The National Public Procurement Agency reported that the government would spend around Rp 7.9 trillion (almost $471 million) to purchase the smart screens. These devices will also make their way to the schools in Indonesia's remote areas, sparking concerns over electricity issues. Chief of Presidential Staff Muhammad Qodari recently told reporters that solar energy could be an alternative solution in response to the electricity constraints.

"We do have plans to use solar power [in Indonesian villages]. ... The Primary and Secondary Education Ministry will be in charge of the technical aspects," Qodari told reporters on the sidelines of the 2025 DGVeRS forum.
