Prabowo to Inaugurate Rp 1 Trillion Hospital During Papua Visit
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto is set to visit Jayapura, Papua, to inaugurate a hospital built by the Ministry of Health with a budget of nearly Rp1 trillion, or about $60 million, as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said on Tuesday that the president is scheduled to travel to Jayapura in the near future, although no specific date has been announced.
“In Jayapura, the President will inaugurate a hospital worth almost Rp1 trillion to reinforce healthcare facilities in Papua,” Tito said at the presidential palace.
Governors from Papua’s six provinces have formally requested the construction of hospitals in their respective regions. Central Papua, for example, has sought the development of modern hospitals in Nabire and Wamena.
According to Tito, the government is currently finalizing financing schemes to support hospital construction across these provinces.
On the same day, President Prabowo announced the formation of an Executive Committee for the Acceleration of Papua’s Special Autonomy Development. He said the body was established to assist local leaders in speeding up development programs across the region.
The committee is also intended to ensure that central government programs targeting Papua can be implemented swiftly and translated into tangible benefits for local communities.
“The purpose of forming this committee is to help all governors and regents in Papua accelerate development,” Prabowo said while addressing six governors and 40 mayors and regents from across the region at the State Palace.
The president stressed that priority programs for Papua align with national initiatives implemented elsewhere in Indonesia. These include the free nutritious meals program for schoolchildren and pregnant women, which has begun reaching Papua, although some remote areas remain underserved.
Other central government programs in Papua include free education, infrastructure development, and food security initiatives as part of a long-term strategy to improve living standards.
“Food security and food estate programs in Papua are priorities,” Prabowo said.
He also underscored the importance of completing the Trans-Papua Road to improve interregional connectivity. Better road access, he said, would open up isolated areas and help reduce high logistics costs that have long burdened Papuan communities.
Prabowo said improving infrastructure remains a key pillar in efforts to achieve more equitable development across Papua.
