Semarang. President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday instructed the government to accelerate the long-planned Trans-Sumatra Railway and Trans-Kalimantan Railway projects, reaffirming his administration's commitment to expanding rail infrastructure beyond Java.

Speaking at the inauguration of the renovated Tawang Railway Station in Semarang, Prabowo directed PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and the Transportation Ministry to prepare for the construction of a railway linking the southern and northern ends of Sumatra before moving ahead with a similar network in Kalimantan.

"I've given KAI and the transportation minister a major task. After building the Trans-Sumatra Railway, we'll move on to the Trans-Kalimantan Railway -- or, if possible, build them simultaneously," Prabowo said.

The President said railways should be viewed as an essential public service rather than purely commercial enterprises, arguing that affordable rail transport plays a vital role in supporting economic inclusion and improving mobility for lower-income communities.

"Railways must serve the people. In many countries, railways are considered a public service -- not merely a profit-making business, but one that must operate efficiently. We want railways that help low-income communities and connect smaller cities," he said.

Expanding railway infrastructure outside Java has long been a national priority to reduce logistics costs and improve connectivity across Indonesia. More than 70% of the country's rail network is currently concentrated on Java, while major islands such as Sumatra and Kalimantan continue to rely heavily on road transport for passenger and freight movement.

The Trans-Sumatra Railway aims to connect existing rail systems in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and South Sumatra into a continuous network.

Meanwhile, the Trans-Kalimantan Railway is expected to support industrial development, facilitate the movement of commodities, and strengthen connectivity with areas surrounding Nusantara, Indonesia's future capital.
