Prabowo Heads to Washington to Finalize Trade Deal, Discuss Gaza Peace Efforts
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto departed for Washington on Monday from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta for talks with his US counterpart Donald Trump, aiming to finalize a bilateral trade agreement and discuss peace and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, Palestine.
Indonesia previously signaled its readiness to join the proposed “Board of Peace for Gaza,” an initiative backed by Trump, during last month’s World Economic Forum in Davos. The government has yet to confirm whether it will commit a $1 billion contribution as a permanent member of the body.
Jakarta has also pledged to deploy personnel to an International Stabilization Force tasked with maintaining security in Gaza.
Trade negotiations are expected to feature prominently in the talks after Trump indicated plans to impose a 19% tariff on Indonesian imports, down from an earlier proposed rate of 32%. The visit is seen as an effort to conclude the agreement and secure more favorable terms for Indonesian exporters.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya are accompanying the president on the trip.
