Prabowo Heads to UN, Plans Stops in Japan, Canada, and the Netherlands
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto departed Indonesia late Friday for a multi-country trip that includes delivering his first address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. The presidential aircraft took off from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in East Jakarta at 11:10 p.m.
Foreign Minister Sugiono said Prabowo is scheduled to speak on September 23, with a focus on the Israel-Palestine conflict, where he will underline Indonesia’s support for a two-state solution.
The UN General Assembly provides momentum to reinvigorate multilateralism at a time when the global environment is increasingly marked by protectionism and conflict, Sugiono told reporters. He added that Prabowo is slated to be the third speaker, following the leaders of Brazil and the United States.
Sugiono noted that Prabowo is also seeking a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump, though confirmation from the White House is still pending.
Prabowo has yet to meet Trump in person since the latter's reelection, but the two leaders spoke over the telephone, discussing the US tariff rate on Indonesia when Prabowo was in Brussels to meet EU leaders in July.
Before arriving in New York, Prabowo will make a stop in Japan to visit Indonesia’s pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka. Following his UN address, he will travel to Canada to sign the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Ottawa on September 24, before continuing on to the Netherlands.
Accompanying the president are Foreign Minister Sugiono; Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan; Trade Minister Budi Santoso; Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai; and Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani, who also serves as CEO of state-owned holding company Danantara.
