Jakarta. Villagers in the Central Java town of Purbalingga were shocked to find the grave of a young woman dug up by a stranger just a day after her burial earlier this week.

The two-meter grave in Binangun village, in the district of Mrebet, was found partially dug up, but investigations revealed that the woman’s body and the bamboo platform above it remained intact, leaving questions about the perpetrator’s motive.

Local police remained in the dark two days after the discovery on Monday, despite conducting a crime scene investigation and interviewing witnesses.

“We have investigated the grave and dug deeper to confirm that the condition of the body and the bamboo platform remains intact,” Adjunct Commissioner Aris Setianto, head of the criminal investigation unit of the Banjarnegara Police, told BTV network.

The body belonged to a dentistry student at Muhammadiyah University in Yogyakarta who died from natural causes and was buried on Sunday morning.

“She died from an illness and had been treated at the hospital prior,” the officer said. The deceased, identified by the initials Efri Nawati, was 19 years old.

“We are questioning witnesses around the scene. One witness reported that the street lamp was turned off on Sunday evening, although it has an automatic switch to turn on after dusk, indicating that someone had manually turned the switch off,” Aris said.

No significant clues have been found beyond this, he added.

“We are continuing our investigation to track down the perpetrator and determine the motive. The cemetery is in a quiet area, but residents have taken the initiative to guard the site after the incident,” Aris said.
