Jakarta. Indonesian football powerhouse Persija Jakarta has appointed former Indonesia national team coach Shin Tae-yong as its new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 Super League season.

The South Korean manager has signed a three-year contract and will be tasked with leading Persija’s push for domestic silverware after the club fell short of its championship ambitions last season.

The appointment was announced during a press conference at Jakarta International Stadium on Monday, attended by Shin and club executives. He replaces Brazilian coach Mauricio Souza, whose contract was not renewed following Persija’s failure to win the league title.

“Our goal is to deliver the best possible performances with Persija and achieve the highest position we can,” Shin said.

Persija ended the 2025/26 campaign in third place with 71 points, eight behind champions Persib Bandung and runners-up Borneo FC, who both finished on 79 points.

Persija President Mohamad Prapanca said Shin’s experience and track record were key factors behind the decision to recruit the 55-year-old coach.

“We began intensive internal discussions around gameweek 27 regarding the head coach position,” Prapanca said.

“We expect the new coach to have the commitment to take Persija to the top of the league. He must possess extensive experience, discipline, strong commitment, and a willingness to contribute to the development of young players from the Persija academy.”

Shin is one of the most recognizable figures in Indonesian football after managing the national team from 2019 to 2025. During his tenure, he oversaw a significant improvement in Indonesia’s international competitiveness and guided the country to the AFC Asian Cup finals in 2023, its first appearance in the tournament in 16 years.

Although he did not win a major trophy with the national team, Shin helped elevate expectations for Indonesian football and twice led Indonesia to the final of the AFF U-23 Championship.
