Jakarta. The father of Affan Kurniawan, a ride-hailing driver who was killed after being run over by a police armored vehicle during a protest in Jakarta, urged authorities on Friday to ensure that only officers proven guilty face legal consequences.

“We are not filing a lawsuit. We just want justice, only for those who committed the act. Not all police should have to suffer,” Zulkifli, Affan’s father, told reporters in Jakarta.

Affan died on Thursday after being run over by a tactical vehicle carrying seven members of the Police's Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) when clashes broke out near the corps' complex.

Zulkifli said that National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo met the family a day earlier and left the decision on legal steps entirely in their hands. “The police chief said, ‘Please think it over, whichever way you choose, we will handle the legal process completely,’” he recalled.

He added that Listyo had assured the family that the case would be thoroughly investigated. “He promised to pursue this until the end,” Zulkifli said.

The National Police’s internal affairs division, Propam, has concluded that the seven Brimob officers inside the vehicle violated the police code of ethics. They have been placed in special detention at Propam headquarters for 20 days, from August 29 to September 17.

Affan’s death has sparked widespread public sympathy and anger. Hundreds of fellow ride-hailing drivers held solidarity actions in Jakarta on Friday, distributing black ribbons to mourn his passing and demand accountability.
