One Indonesian Reported Dead, Two Injured in Yemen Ship Attack
Jakarta. Three Indonesian crew members were among the victims of an attack on a vessel near Yemen's Bab al-Mandeb Strait, with one reportedly killed and two others injured, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
Heni Hamidah, the ministry's director for the protection of Indonesian citizens, said the three Indonesians were crew members aboard the MV Tihamah, which was struck by a drone while docked at a port in the Bab al-Mandeb area.
"One Indonesian citizen suffered minor injuries from shrapnel and did not require hospitalization, while another sustained serious injuries and has received treatment at a hospital," Heni said in a written statement.
"Another Indonesian citizen has been reported by several international media outlets to have died in the incident. However, this information is still being verified," she added.
The vessel had 11 crew members on board, comprising eight Pakistani nationals and three Indonesians.
Indonesia's embassy in Muscat is communicating with relevant authorities to obtain official confirmation of the condition and whereabouts of all three Indonesian crew members, Heni said.
The embassy is also prepared to facilitate their repatriation when their condition and the security situation allow, she added.
Anadolu Agency previously reported that the attack was suspected to have been carried out by Yemen's Houthi group. Two Pakistani nationals were also reported killed in the attack.
The Indonesian government has not independently confirmed either the reported death of its citizen or responsibility for the attack.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait, between Yemen and the Horn of Africa, connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and is a critical shipping route for vessels traveling between Asia and Europe.
