Jakarta. The work for the Indonesian new capital’s parliamentary complex and the judicial area will kick off as early as end-October 2025, according to a senior official, dismissing worries that the multi-billion dollar megaproject had stalled.

Indonesia is currently building a new capital entirely from scratch in East Kalimantan. This city, also known as Nusantara, began construction in 2022 with key buildings such as the presidential palace already reaching completion. 

According to Basuki Hadimuljono, the head of the Nusantara authority, work is underway to move on to the next round of the city’s development, namely the construction of the legislative and judicial area. This next phase of development will begin some time around the end of October or early November.

"We have finished all the preparation for the upcoming construction," Basuki said.

The parliamentary complex will encompass the buildings meant for the House of Representatives and the People's Consultative Assembly. These buildings meant for the country's lawmakers will lie on the east side of the so-called central government core zone. The judicial area -- which will also serve the Supreme Court -- will be located on the west, according to Basuki.

The Public Works Ministry has allocated an extra Rp 8.1 trillion ($504 million) to construct the buildings and supporting facilities. The government has put the project for the roadworks that will connect to the said areas this month with a contract worth Rp 2.9 trillion. This road is set to span 3.7 kilometers. Its construction is set to take around 660 days.

The new capital construction was the centerpiece of former President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s policies. The ex-mayor said that the construction could move the current economic activities away from being too centered on the Java island. The government had allocated Rp 6.3 trillion for the Nusantara capital authority in the 2026 budget plan, up from Rp 4.7 trillion that the agency would get this year.
