Jakarta. The Constitutional Court (MK) has lowered the threshold for regional head nominations, easing the requirements for political parties. This revision, requested by the Labor Party and Gelora Party, will allow the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to potentially nominate Anies Baswedan for Jakarta governor.

"Partially granting the petition," said MK Chairman Suhartoyo during the ruling announcement on Tuesday.

The court amended Article 40(1) of Law No. 10/2016, previously requiring either 25 percent of the vote share or 20 percent of the Regional Representative Council (DPRD) seats. The new thresholds are based on the province's voter population, ranging from 6.5 percent to 10 percent of valid votes.

The Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU) has set the permanent voter list (DPT) for the 2024 Jakarta election at 8,252,897 voters. Under the new rules, PDI-P now needs only 7.5 percent of valid votes to nominate a candidate, such as former Jakarta Governor and ex-presidential candidate Anies Baswedan, for the Jakarta gubernatorial race.

PDI-P, the only party in Jakarta yet to declare a gubernatorial candidate, received 850,174 votes or 14.01 percent in the 2024 Jakarta DPRD election. With this adjustment, PDI-P can now nominate its own candidate.

PDI-P politician Said Abdullah had said that the party will support Anies Baswedan's candidacy for the Jakarta gubernatorial election in 2024. Anies Baswedan is expected to run alongside PDI-P member and former Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi.
